Some musings and an overdue Pikelet update

Before the update on Pikelet, I would like to share a few thoughts about the reasons I had for starting this blog:

  1. A big part of it was to give myself a little extra motivation to document our foster experiences to make sure that I did - it can be challenging to find the time to dedicate to cutting videos, editing photos, writing and experimenting with the site trying to make things look interesting. I will be trying to keep the updates coming more regularly.

  2. I want to experiment and get better with creating content for the site - feedback is great. Anyone feel free to get in contact in the comments below or the social links above with things that you like or don’t like.

  3. There are a couple of creators and animal lovers out there that inspire me. This weekend I watched a couple of videos from two of my favourites - Jackson Galaxy and Cat Man Chris (of Cole and Marmalade fame). This two make such interesting content and do so much more for animals than I could ever dream of. I’ve learnt so much about how to look after cats from Jackson’s books and videos - I can’t recommend his work enough. And Cat Man Chris - the guy seems to have a heart of gold and his videos absolute crack me up. They had to take a bit of a break but I’m glad they’re back. It seems pretty unlikely that anyone would make their way onto Calico’s Friends who didn’t know Cole and Marmalade but here’s their welcome back video.

  4. The Jackson Galaxy video on the right (or below on mobile) is one that really got to me as it reminded me so much of Pikelet and why I wanted to record our fosters’ journeys. Each one is different and there are definitely some big differences between Johnny’s and Pikelet’s stories but also a lot of similarities. We spent months not really being able to pat Pikelet because she would bite or swipe but that moment when you finally break through - I cannot begin to describe the elation and relief in that feeling. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that fostering saves lives - there is nothing else like it!

Pikelet’s progress

So this week has been another amazing week for Pikelet. I don’t think there are any new amazing milestones but she just continues to impress me with her progress. With every passing day she is becoming more and more comfortable with being picked up - she won’t always let me, sometimes she doesn’t want to stay too long (so we don’t push it) and sometimes it can get her a little excitable afterwards. But the other morning she happily let me pick her up three times in the limited time that I get with her before work. I have noticed that she perhaps stays a little further away from me afterwards sometimes but it’s only ever so slightly. The other thing that I’m noticing is that she’s really starting to rub up against my leg whenever I’m walking around her. She just can’t get enough human contact now - and that’s just so remarkably different from the little creature that moved in here. I am going to miss her like crazy once she finds her furever home but she’s ready to find her purrfect family who can give her the pats that she now loves, especially at the end of each day.

To finish this little update because I assume most people are here for cute kitty content rather than my ramblings, I’ve put together this little compilation video (below) of Pikelet enjoying pats. Compare that with a couple of videos of her from when she first moved in hiding in the scratching post - she amazes me!
