Recycling and volunteering - two pretty good things

I wrote a brief article on LinkedIn recently about how my volunteer roles at RSPCA Queensland have helped me in my career so thought I would also share it here for those who aren’t connected to me on LinkedIn. Hope you enjoy!

I've been volunteering at and a foster carer for RSPCA Queensland for almost two years and clocked up around 650 hours across various roles. I do it because I love it but I thought I would share some thoughts about how it has helped me in my career and life. I am trying to fundraise to support the incredible work that they do - if this reaches and inspires you please consider donating to support RSPCA Queensland through my campaign at https://www.iamforanimals.org.au/fundraisers/calicosfriends/.

The role I've been doing the longest is on the Volunteer Desk, a small part of which means that I am very often the first and/or last face (save your jokes) that many other volunteers see at the start/end of their shift and particularly for first day volunteers. I try to always be friendly, exuberant and engaging to try create or leave these volunteers with a positive impression and energy. As an introvert, this does not come naturally but it has helped me develop this valuable skill.

Volunteering at the RSPCA School for Dogs, I am increasingly being asked to lead the class, and give one-on-one instruction and feedback to participants. Having not actually owned a dog since high school I feel odd teaching others even though I have learnt a lot about dog behaviour and training. Leading the class challenges me to be engaging and confident even when I don't feel that way by trusting in the knowledge that I have (not overextending). Plus it is developing my skills being supportive in my coaching and when giving feedback. (Don't worry, there is always a highly trained instructor supervising me who will jump in when necessary - fortunately not too much so far.)

Finally, helping out in dog care - this is where I've learnt a lot about dog behaviour, training and reading dogs. But in terms of my career, helping here has reminded about the importance of self-care and mental well-being. This section can occasionally be emotionally stressful but most of the time spending time with dogs is my relaxation time and leaves me mentally refreshed and recharged, which I think is incredibly important for everyone.

I have a blog and social accounts about my volunteering and fostering experiences with RSPCA Queensland, where you will also find my post from yesterday. If you're interested please check them out at: https://www.calicosfriends.com/, https://www.facebook.com/CalicosFriends and https://www.instagram.com/calicosfriends/.

I also love volunteering at events where I have tried many different roles. I believe that I'll be Santa at an upcoming RSPCA Queensland event soon - not sure yet how that would fit into this article but maybe there'll be a Part 2. Stay safe and have a wonderful holiday season!
